I am about to turn 32 in December , and what i have realized is that my taste in EM , has changed in 2 ways .

1. I have become much more picky in what i listen to or play out at sets , it takes alot for me to like a track ! I think this is normal and it happened to most of you old farts like me

2. The question that is more serious and needs answering , do you start enjoying more commercial and cheesy music as you get older ?? Recently , i dont really mind listening to alot of tracks , that i think wouldnt appeal to me at all 5 years ago !!

For example , i think this track is brilliant .... !!!





and that Laid Back Luke track , are you scared of me or something ...!!

I think as you get order your music taste is supposed to elevate and you become more picky, because supposedly you have heard it all but i guess some people start not to give a shit about what's commercial and what's not, mainly because they are sick of ignoring what's known as 'commercial' track. Honestly the whole commercial, not commercial definition is overrated, abused and overused by now and should be dropped out of people's dictionary already, if you like a track commercial or not embrace and jam to it.

Hahah Nick, good points. I am with you on the issue of not caring about what other people label tracks, and basically groove to the stuff that makes you move, whatever that shit is. It doesnt matter if the music is commercial, so long as it is your calling. That being said, I still think that listening to too much commercialism should be a crime, maybe there should be a threshold on the amount of commercialism aloud in public, like alcohol. ** runs away from the commercial freaks with a big middle finger** Kiddin

maybe i shouldnt have used the word commercial , because i am the one who usually defends the fact that you listen to whatever the hell you feel like listening to , without giving 2 left testicles !!

what i meant was , music that is usually played on the radio . Usually , 1 percent of that music appeals to me , recently , that percentage went up to a good 4 or 5 percent ! but like you guys said ... who cares !! i was just asking !!

and saleem ... btw i had to cancel my ibiza plans this year due to many reasons beyond my control , but i promise you , you would want to come with me next time . A couple of months ago , i played a back 2 back set with Hassan H , here in Amman . and the result was insane !! we completed each other perfectly ... such a filthy set , ask him about it next time you see him !!

My taste in EM has become sooooo picky , that less than 10 percent of what i listen to , actually makes it to my cd case . the rest is usually deleted if on pc , or stored away if on cd !!

Edit : and i know , deep down , you all like the track i posted in my first post, but you are scared to admit it because you might start hitting on little , blond kids at the next big event in Beirut !!!

considering I'm 1.5yrs older than you i'd LOOOOOVE to answer this question:

1. You definitely become more picky: with music, with clubs, with who you surround yourself with, etc. I rarely go out in Dubai. If I do, its a damn special reason: Birthday, my bro's events, girlfriend insisting. The last time I went out in Dubai for MUSIC only it was Damian Lazarus and that was like 2months ago (and before that one I don't remember, maybe Hernan like 4.5months ago)

2. the Cheesy/Commercial/Radio music fiasco: I remember you telling me you are engaged (maybe by now married), i too live with someone who's much less strict about music than I am. She'll gladly shake her booty to some perfect Digweed set, as much as she will to Akon, Alanis Morissette, or Beastie Boys! Now when you live with someone (or engaged), its very difficult to remain 100% true to your musical snobbery! At home I am--my Mac has nothing but pure class shit on it! But when you go out, unless ur the asshole that leaves ur girlfriend/wife/mistress/lover/fiancee at home while u go to perfect raves with perfect music, ur going to have to settle.

The girlfriend/wife influence is the beginning of the end of all musical elitist snobs. Thats why when I went to Berlin: she stayed home, if I go to Ibiza: she stays home....but considering I really enjoy my time with her, I've just retired the big events and remain a total music snob at home!

and based on that: that track is the cheesiest most commercial garbage I've ever heard and both my left testicles think so

i am sooo picky and territorial when it comes to my music , no one can tell me what to listen to , and the fact that i dj sometimes and have the latest music , she respects that and tries to get into the scene ...

I think that it depends on the character of the person. If you start to not care whether this or that is commercial or not as you get older, then this is how you are and there's nothing wrong in that (but please within certain limits! ). It's 10 years too soon for me to say something about it but i know myself very well and i think that 10 years from now i will still be intensively filtering what i listen to, i.e. commercial shit is and will be banned from my hard disk/ipod/cds/whatever (that's if nothing happens in 2012 )

As for the girlfriend situation, i'm very lucky to have a girlfriend who is totally into Trance (Uplifting, Progressive and Vocal mostly) so there's nothing to worry about as long as we will be together

from one old fart to another: dont give a hoot about what others think! the essential is for you to enjoy it! and this what everyone will realize with age i think.
for me it has always been the case, EDM in general and Trance in specific was a choice of enjoyment and never a decision based on any other variable. whatever you listen to, if you like it then hell with everyone else even if they all disagree!
funny how many hardcore EDM'ers never stop to diss other styles and consider them all cheesy and commercial when most of the EDM producers actually listen extensively to other non-EDM styles and get even inspired by them!
personally up till now am still an avid trance listener though i do enjoy other styles (but mostly older stuff) but to answer your question i think as we get older our views to what's cheesy/commercial change even if we get more and more picky. As much as these 2 facts sound contradicting, actually the common grounds will form your future musical taste!

There are many factors that will indirectly reflect on your musical taste. For example you got promoted & you don't have enough time to dedicate as a DJ. You might not even have enough time to listen to new releases. As we grow old we become patient & less hyper so your degree of tolerance will increase. Thus you will not care if you listen to commercial or none commercial. What matter most as mentioned before is YOU. What do you like? To be honest you have reached an age that turns you from a follower to a leader in your future family (sam mentioned engaged? mabrook). So your siblings will consider you an idol and will imitate every move. Now what do you want them to listen to? And yes you can shape their taste at least until they are mature enough to pick their own. Do you want them to hang pictures of Star Academy so-called stars? Or drag you to some hip hop emo party as they turn 13? You have to decide which path to choose.
