What's your fave bassline?

Postby crow » Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:27 am

For the past decade (or so) a lot of producers have risen from sloppy, rotting bedrooms to well known club stages due to their talent in composing music in the EDM scene, and it's every now and then that a track gets released with a bassline that once it kicks in during the first minute in the track, it "clicks" in your ears. Usually those tracks, in my case, leave a mark since their basslines have been so powerful and unique that I think I won't be hearing something like this in a loooooooooooooooooong time.

Back in 2004, when I actually started browsing for other artists than the usual mainstream onces, I came across a remix whose bassline will never be forgotten.

Chicane feat. Bryan Adams - Don't Give Up (Alex Gold & The Sound Express Mix)

I recall telling a friend back then that this will be my favorite bassline no matter what! And after listening to the track again 2 days ago, I couldn't help but put it on repeat for the rest of the day. If you haven't heard this gem yet, hunt it down and you'll know what I mean. However, put in mind that once again, there are always different tastes. This will remain my fave classic bassline.

My second part of the topic is the future fave bassline. No no... I'm not copying Armin! I'm really telling you that there is a future fave since I'm still unsure. Recently I've been amazed by Simon Patterson's work, not only because he's one half of Dogzilla, but because his sound is unique. And on top of all that, his bassline is simply OH-MY-GOD-I-CAN'T-BELIEVE-I-POOPED-MYSELF!
His bassline in F16 and soon to be released Panic Attack seem to be covering dust on the Don't Give Up remix I mentioned earlier instead of me cleaning the dust OFF it! We'll see how it goes though!

Those are pretty much my 2 fave basslines (all time and future fave).
What are yours? :)

How can you not have a fave bassline? There must be one out there that tore you to pieces the first time you heard it! Anything from 2002-2004 at least?

The most hairblowing basslines I've heard hail from Progressive House, but let's not go there now...

Trance-wise, I'd totally agree with both tracks recommended by Crow; I was pretty amazed at Alex Gold's remix when I first heard it (too bad he shifted to House now, a la Tall Paul) though not as much as Ferry's bassline in Adagio got my back arching on my first listen (which was actually my first Trance listen) and still does until this very day actually, and Panic Attack is, quite frankly, my favorite Tech Trance piece of genius so far this year! Its promo CDR is already being distibuted bu Spinnin' Records, and the moment that bassline made its dramatic entrance I just KNEW the track drew its path to Nocturnal 702!

But generally speaking, Progressive Trance beats Uplifting Trance in basslines any day. Some UpTrance producers are attempting to generate more innovative basslines, some even going for dual-bass such as Airbase, but my eardrum still beats for ProgTrance basslines more, be it Moor or others... I really don't want to get into the names because the list will just go on and on!

Tech Trance, at least the more modern one (mid-2006 and onwards) is dishing out some really impressive basslines, the main theme of which is FILTH, the agression of which is causing significant dancefloor damage. I've only had the chance to pound a Tech Trance set (semi-set actually) once, at Art Lounge, and my God was the floor vibrating, physically and humanly!
The penetrating influence of Electro into some Tech Trance and some Progressive Trance is also developing into a fruity sound. Current releases are already experimenting with such bleeps and tweaks, and the results have been nothing short of fascinating thus far. Much more to come from this cross-genre influence fo shizzle!

I really am intrigued to pinpoint the ONE bassline that left me in awe... I'll invest some thinking into that! Meanwhile, keep the opinions flowing, I'm loving this thread, big thanks fly out to Crow!
