Right, the only music I listened to was the one that you find on TV. So naturally, I watched clips and listened to whatever they sang. I was 12. I wasn't a listener really, it was there on TV and I just watched. So yea, I lost my musical virginity at 12.
I remember Dr. Alban, his song Look Who's Talking was the first song I ever listened to. Then Sash! made a breakthrough to the Lebanese TV and Ecuador was everywhere on TV (except TeleLiban since the government abandoned them - all their programmes were Elie Kirbej and black & white stuff that brought memories back from my mum's childhood - of course, it meant nothing to me).
Up next came Fatboy Slim, Flying Steps, Bomfunk MCs and I wanted to be a breakdancer. I gave up trying to be one when my boot flew out to smash my mate's vase in the hall of his house (he was my mentor... ihm) I shall breakdance no more.
Discovering trance was a pure accident: no friend begging me to try his music, no CD appearing divinely in my lap, and no one I knew listened to any interesting non-mainstream music to begin with.
It was 2000 or 2001 (I don't remember exactly). I finished work and got back home. I got bored so I decided to take my bicycle for a spin. I never been to downtown Beirut before that day. I knew how to get there (follow the traffic, then follow the lights... it's strange how I never got molested or kidnapped when armed with such Jurassic-style directions).
Anyway, I got to downtown. Roads were closed, and a huge set up was installed. Music was booming out... loud fast music... I can see Virgin Megastore behind all that. I didn't know what was going on until I asked an old man sitting at the road side on a chair.
''Young people's music'' he responded.
I stuck around. I loved it. It was trance. They were having a trance party in the middle of Martyr's Square. And it was only starting: it was 09-ish.
It got harder, louder, and more people came in. I just stood there looking. They were dancing and I thought they looked funny. But I enjoyed the music and that was enough to begin with. I wanted to stay, but I still had to cycle back home (took about 45 mins... without me losing the way) and face an angry dad that didn't know where I was.
From what I listened to (and managed to ID about 3 months later) was:
Members of Mayday - 10 in 01
Ramirez - La Musika Tremenda (Yves Deruyter Remix)
Fifth Entity - Melody of Consolation
Yves Deruyter - Rythmic Bazz
Signum - First Strike
But ultimately, it was the tune I'll never forget, the one that changed my life, and that turned me inside out:
I got addicted to a music store that had so many CDs that you simply can't find anywhere else easily. In the space of a year: I bought over 130 CDs. Mainly Trance. Then I moved on to Progressive Trance, then Progressive House (while staying faithful to Trance), then came another 180 degree detour in my musical journey:
Faithless - God is a DJ (Astral Projection Remix)
Enter Psytrance.
So it goes like that -
1984 - Birth
1995 - Lost musical virginity to Dr. Alban --> Till 1998: Whatever was on TV.
1998 to 2000 - Breakbeats, bit of Electro: Fatboy Slim, Bomfunk MCs...
2000 - TRANCE: Olive Inc - Into the Sun (Liquid Child Remix) (all trance names from here on)
2002 - Progressive: Sasha + Digweed (whatever they did was worth a listen) Seb Fontaine. Then I started to like Chicane as well.
2003 - PSYTRANCE: Faithless - God is a DJ (Astral Projection Remix)
Then on the 7th day he rested.....
