Mike Koglin's The Silence is a classic Trance masterpiece that has just been refreshed by the man himself. 2004 ain't over yet and Mike already labeled this remix as a 2005 one; could its sound be that futuristic? Let's see...

A minute of a beat building itself up, then a minute of a driving bassline, then half a minute of an uplifting lead, until we finally reach the breakdown point at 3:30 where that Depeche Mode melody is thrown in, building itself up, only the be then cast away with the return of the beat with some acidish synth; quite a disappointment for melody freaks... But the second breakdown is a completely different story, with the melody being the center of attention both during and after the breakdown.

Will Holland is one of the rising names in the industry, and it seems he really wanted to hit it big with a remix of this magnitude. Sweetness from the opening minutes promise a more melodic-oriented remake of this gem. The breakdown features a sweetass piano roll with the "enjoy the silence" vocals in the background, shortly followed by the melody, completely rethought and turned into a pure melodic storm of sound! If it weren't for those vocals, you wouldn't even tell this was The Silence! Beautiful stuff from Will - this is definetly a name to look out for in the future.

Back in 1998, this tune was also remixed by Matt when he was younger, and it was pretty damn well remixed too. The 2005 remix is no different either: starts off with a dark breakbeat that slowly progresses throughout the early minutes of the track, with those vocals added to some beepy sound. The breakdown is quite bizarre (in an interesting Matt Darey manner of course): strong bangs, minor percussion, the vocals, some violin notes, until things finally kick off at 4:20 margin, where the original melody is all reverebed up giving it a much dreamier effect that works great with the breaks.
When I see a release with different remixes on it, the first thing I demand to hear is variety, and this is exactly the case here. 3 remixes, each one completely different in style than the other, thus a bit of everything for everyone. Personally, my favorite was the Will Holland remix; I was never a fan of taking a commercial melody and turning it into Trance (though in some rare cases it does turn out pretty good like with The Silence), and so Will Holland's reconstruction was definetly my favorite (also due to its highly melodic inclination). What was yours?
