Based in the Ukraine, Smart Apes, proving that our simian friends can produce music too, surface on Deepblue for a hearty round of progressive fun. Okay so maybe the Apes aren't really monkeys but it was a funny way to start the review, wasn't it? Anyway...moving on.
The Original Mix is a progressive number with a leisurely beat to drive it along. Spooky synths and a general rolling riff, coupled with vocal samples, help this along. Because this is is progressive, it'd be nice to start a DJ set with this; it has a trancey feel as well as a housey feel almost. When the tune does come in, its melodic texture is somewhat euphoric but is, at the same time, spooky and quite ethereal. It seems to sum up the Deepblue remit perfectly. And when the tune kicked back in, I got goosebumps. Seriously. It reminded me slightly of Andy Tau's Late Night EP, also on Deepblue. Just thought I'd drop another one of my reviews in there. Anyway...on to the remix.
The Airstatic is a Russian producer and he drops a chunky, more epic, version. A Russian remixing Ukrainians! Uncanny! Ahem. Sounding very different to the original, this is suitably more upbeat and is definitely a different kettle of fish. Keeping the melodic feel, rather than heading for the progressive crowd, this remix appeals to the more upbeat crowds. Of course, that might mean its not for everyone but it really is. This version is more euphoric than the original mix and wouldn't sound out of place during a peak-time set or even an early rising set to get people on the floor.
