I'll write a short summary of yesterday's games so here goes...
Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal
Sionko 17'
-------------
Deco 8'
C. Ronaldo 63'
Quaresma 92'
Portugal dominated this game. Actually the starting line-up didn't change at all from the first game against Turkey. The same goes for the formation. On the second side, Matejovsky and Baros replaced Jarolim and Koller. The Czech player that impressed me the most so far is Sionko. He's been the most active player in both games and he scored the unique goal of his team against the Portuguese. I hoped that in the second half the Czechs would attack more but unfortunately nothing changed. Portugal still dominated and this resulted in 2 goals scored by Ronaldo and Quaresma. Karel Bruckner did say that his team can do more but unfortunately the Czechs weren't able to deliver a better performance.
-----------------------------------
Switzerland 1-2 Turkey
Yakin 27'
-------------
Senturk 57'
Arda 91'
Switzerland's best scorer in the history, Frei, got a knee injury in the first game against Czech Republic and will be out for a few weeks. Changes had to be made in the starting line-up in order to beat the Turks. I was personally looking forward to this game because of the events that happened 2 years ago back in Istambul and Turkey won 4-2 against the Swiss but didn't qualify for the World Cup 2006. What followed afterwards shows the lack of sports spirit in the Turkish team. It wasn't the first time this kind of immature and unacceptable behavior took place among the Turkish fans or the players.
So this game had to be entertaining! And it was the case. The Swiss showed their potential, although i have to admit that the heavy rain helped them a lot. IMO, Switzerland is much better than Austria (although FIFA ranking is 100% reliable, it does show the level of each country!) and i'm sad that they are out. The Swiss were more active and adventurous than the Turks in the first half. It's really not easy to play on a lake! () just like against Portugal, the Turks woke up in the second half and this time showed more will to score and win, which they eventually did with a wonderful and quick counter attack in the last minute of the game.
Portugal is the first team qualified for the second round and will face the 2nd team of Group B (Germany, Croatia, Poland, Austria). The last game of the group A, Czech Republic vs Turkey, will be full of intensity since both teams have to win to qualify.
As for Switzerland, it's the first team to be out of the tournament. The last game Portugal vs Switzerland will just be a game for the 1st place of the group.
GROUP A - Standings
1- Portugal: 6 points, +4
2- Czech Republic: 3 points, -1
3- Turkey: 3 points, -1
4- Switzerland: 0 point, -2
Next games - Sunday 15 June
Switzerland - Portugal @ 7pm
Turkey - Czech Republic @ 9h45pm
