As expected, Croatia won and now the 2 organizers lost their opening games. But IMO Austria played better than the Swiss, especially in the second half. They pressured the Croates and tried to score, were even quite dangerous a couple of times. But they didn't have enough power of penetration to get into the box and score the equaliser. Personally i wanted a draw since it would be better for Poland, no matter what the result could be against Germany. But this is football...

As for the 2nd game of the night, it was entertaining. The Germans were dangerous in their attacks, very accurate in their passes and showed some technical skills. Krzynowek had a first scoring chance for Poland but he missed his shot. Zurawski later on also could score but he missed again. Gomez was very close to score for Germany but the defender didn't let him. Concerning the first goal, it was 100% offside. But i got used to mistakes by referees those last 4 years... i'm not surprised anymore to be honest. Yesterday there were 5 mistakes made. The ball possession was 50-50 and we had more shots on goal, but only 2 on target at half time. In the second half Poland was more dangerous and pressured more. Unfortunately they didn't have enough skills or maybe the reason was the lack of players upfront. Germany's second goal was very beautiful. A double by Podolski who was born in Poland (!). In the last 10 minutes the Poles seemed like they didn't want to score anymore. But they played way much much better than in the World Cup 2006. There is potential and i strongly believe that they can win the 2 remaining games. They just have to be more concentrated in defense and outnumber the rival's defense in attacks.

The first goal was offside. Experts in Poland and the Western European countries agreed on this after having analyzed the occasion. The Germans also believe it was. Klose was offside when the ball was given. But the assistant ref didn't see it. And when Smolarek scored in the second half, he was offside and the assistant saw it... bah mistakes have been invading football since 2004...
As for Klose and Podolski, well the first one has been recently rejecting his origins and wants to be fully German. In 2006 he wasn't like that. So damn the guy. I'm sure he would have celebrated like crazy if he scored. As for Poldi, respect to this boy! He didn't celebrate as a sign of respect and after the game he went to Poland's room to chat with his compatriots. Anyway, it's the fault of the Polish Football Federation that they didn't ask them/him to play for their country... Klose most probably would have refused, but i'm sure that Poldi would have accepted.

Anyway, now Poland can beat Austria AND Croatia. I've been following this team the last years and saw their improvement, especially since 2006. They do have a couple of weak points but they also have qualities.

Poland coach Leo Beenhakker has apologised to Michael Ballack after a Polish newspaper depicted him holding up the decapitated heads of Germany coach Joachim Löw and Ballack himself...
Beenhakker, who himself is Dutch, spoke to Bild about the images: "That is rubbish. It shows that all over the world there are sick people. I distance myself from it totally.

"I hope I can speak in the name of many Polish people, but at least I speak in the name of the Polish team and everybody around it.

"We want to say that we apologize to the German people for what was yesterday on the front page of a certain paper in Poland.

"It was an awful thing, and we want to totally distance ourselves from these, let me say, weird and dirty and sick people who think they have to represent Poland this way in relation to Euro 2008.

"But I have said from the first day that we knew our opponents, that we have to separate and stay totally away from these emotions and sentimental things and within the team just focus on the game ... I don't lose any time on this emotional and, as we have seen, sometimes dirty occasions."

The chairman of Bundestag's sport committee, Peter Danckert, slammed the daily for the publication: "This photo-montage is a scandal. I hope that the Polish government reacts appropriately to it."

Germany coach Löw did his utmost to ignore the paper, declaring: "What was in one newspaper is not representative ... Polish and German fans were together celebrating the match at the World Cup two years ago

"I have a very high opinion of Beenhakker and he is very humane and very open."
