Which camera should I buy?

Postby crow » Sat Apr 04, 2009 11:47 am

I've been wanting to buy a digi cam for myself since I have always used my phones' embedded digital cameras. Now I've short-listed 3 cameras from 3 different brands:

Panasonic's Lumix DMC FX 150
Image

Sony's Cybershot DSC T700
Image

Canon's Digital IXUS 980 IS
Image

The 3 of them are awesome cameras!! Especially the Canon! Though I'm still confused. I'm looking for ease-of-use, which both the Sony and the Panasonic have, yet I'm looking for slightly more control of photo shoot such as shutter speed and other aspects, which the Canon has.

I'm also looking for a camera which I can use at parties, events, concerts, gigs...etc. The video feature has to be good too! I noticed that in the Canon, you can't zoom while you're shooting video. Which sucks....

Another thing I'm interested in is the ability to have a clear sound while recording video in a gig. The best video recording I have heard to date comes from the Sony Cybershot series. No sound distortion or whatever.

I think the Panasonic Lumix has the same thing.

What do you guys and girls think?

Would appreciate some opinions about this since I'm making my purchase very soon.

Don't worry about the prices. They're somewhat similar :)

Thanks

T700 is touch screen i think? I wouldn't choose it because of that. Personally when i look for a digital camera it has to be either a Sony, a Canon or an Olympus. I dunno how it is with the canon when recording a video, but with Sony for sure you can't zoom in. From this list you gave, i advise you to choose the Canon, no disappointment with it :)

I have now the Olympus mju1030SW and i'm very very satisfied with it :) it has almost everything i need! Took me 2 weeks to take a decision!!

Don't even consider panasonic..

Sony is a great camera in every aspect, but if video is not that important, and you want some sweet pictures, get the Canon. The Canon is 14.7 mp and the Sony is just 10 mp.

Im currently using the 980 IS, I've also used a dozen Sony Cameras. When it comes to picture quality, Canon stole my brand loyalty from Sony after the purchase of the 980 IS.

^ it's a digital zoom, very crappy (equivalent to cropping the image).. while the Panasonic gives u an OPTICAL zoom...

Crow, I would advice u to buy any camera with a proper OPTICAL zoom and that allows u to MANUALLY take photos, dont let the seller fool u with megapixels numbers, 5.0 is more than enough to post ur picture on a unipol bilboard!
If size doesn’t bother u, I would recommend any cam with a 10x optical zoom (or more) and a manual shutter speed control, I got myself awesome professional pictures with a Sony H50 and a Lumix TZ4, these are small (the sony is a bit bulcky) cams but with almost professional DSLR pictures!

The Canon and Panasonic that u posted are equally good, but for the same price u can get a Lumix TZ4 or a Sony H50!!!
I wouldn't recommend the Sony DSC T700, it takes really crappy pictures.

Actually the size of the cam matters.

I'm simply looking for a digi cam. I just got off a convo with a friend and she confirmed to me that the Sony has a much better video capture feature than the Canon in terms of sound. Which is one of the crucial things here for me.

Crow, I wouldn’t advice the DSC T700, the whole T series suck balls..
My friend and I took the T500 for our last year’s Californian trip… The pictures turned out awful! The sky looked grey in all the pictures while it was pretty sunny all the time, the picture was grainy even while we were using 8.0MG size (I never go that far while using other cameras, big sized pictures annoy me a lot)… and of course THAT DAMN FINGER that appears on the top/right of half the shoots took by everyone else then me, because of the eccentric location of the lens on the top corner.

Here, see for urself :)

Get a sony without touch screen. Preferably with a higher megapixel coz these ones have better video quality.. I think you can find a 12 mp or higher with sony now..

the lumix like the one i have has the leica lens, which is one of the best lenses in the market if not the best. but i have trouble with my lumix since its video recording is limited and u cant zoom while recording( but the sound of the recorded video is brilliant-you can practically hook it up to a stereo and get bleeding ears), not to mention that the lumix is small and handy.
if the video thing is not an issue i recomnd the lumix.
and the 10000000 megapixel is all bs u practically don't use except 5 or 6mgp, so don b foold by numbers.
.the underground world is the place to be.

Yes, if Sony, let it be without a touch screen. What i meant earlier is that when recording a film you can't zoom in (that's what i had with my previous Sony digi cam and many other models also have this). Crow if you want a Sony i recommend one of the W series :) and i agree with haroon, no panasonic.

Haha rob! At the beginning i had the same problem with my Olympus but i got used to stop putting my finger near that area  i'm very happy with the Olympus model i got but i still need time to get used to taking pics in different situations, specially at night or during events when it's dark i still try to figure out a couple of things. Video quality is very good (640x480, 30fps and 36 minutes of filming with a 2GB xD card). The microphone is in the front but the audio is low when the camera is 30cm away from the mouth and there is also noise recorded when there is silence (just 1 or 2 persons talking). Unfortunately...

true.. quality depends on the lens, ccd (its a chip that receives light and converts into pixels).

the cameras with higher mp, have better ccd chips.. so therefore they're better than the normal 5,6 mp digi cams..

u dont actually use 12, 15 mp like Roy said, you just use 5 or 6 for normal monitor viewing. In most 15 mp cams, you can choose between 5, 10 , 15 etc mpixels for each shot.

15 mp is still better since
- better ccd
- better video
- you can shoot a 5 mp picture with it and get the benefits of the quality ccd.
